Guest Blog| Timeless Gaming: the lure of retro games

They say you can’t go back.  Usually “they” are referring to specific life event:  high school, the first car, or that one sweet summer where everything was perfect.   Gamers can’t go back either.  Once or twice a year a friend or two proposes to hook up that old NES or Genesis console and do some hard core retro gaming to relive the “good old days” when   games were innocent and pure and brand new.  Everyone’s list is different, but there are some games that appear on more lists than others: Battletoads, Bionic Commando, Blaster Master, Final Fantasy, and Super Mario Bros are just a few of these. All were very good games for their time.  I admit that I have attempted to do a little retro-gaming from time to time, but more often than not I end up disappointed and bored after an hour or two into what was supposed to be an all night gaming session. Guest Blog | Manga Beach Reads

Ah summer… What could be better than heading to the beach to enjoy the lovely weather with something awesome to read? I am lucky that I live close to Coney Island so I’m able to head to the beach quite often. I always pack a manga or two to read while I’m there (which should come as a shock to none of you if you’ve read any of my other posts).

I love horror manga, as well psychological thrillers, but these are left home in summerin favor of some slice of life series. When it’s hot and sunny outside, I prefer comedies that tell the stories of average people, so I’ve compiled a list of the manga that is accompanying me to the beach this summer. Continue reading

Guest Blog | Cooking with Manga

I love to cook. I get immense joy from making something I can enjoy with my friends and family. However, I usually write about manga and anime for Therefore I Geek, so at this point you may be wondering, “What does cooking have to do with manga?” Well, it has quite a bit actually. There are quite a few manga that teach their readers how to cook. For specific recipes, there is even a manga cookbook.

I own this cookbook and have used it quite a few times. It is full of simple but delicious recipes, especially good for quick lunch ideas. Continue reading

Guest Blog | Why I’ve Never Liked Harry Potter

Harry Potter is a worldwide phenomenon and ubiquitous reading material among millenials. It’s easy to see why – the books are escapist, fun, and relatable. So sometimes I feel very alone when I make the startling confession: I really don’t like Harry Potter at all.

My reasons for dislike are numerous, but tend to all come back to a central problem. The first half of the series is for children; the second half is for adults. That’s fine, having the characters grow with the audience is brilliant as a marketing strategy; but in this instance, it deals a body blow to the continuity of the story. The contrived, cobbled-together world of Hogwarts and the greater Wizarding World is perfect for a children’s series. Ghosts as teachers? Cool! A school with a vicious three-legged dog hiding behind a door where a talented first-year could easily find it? Exciting! This kind of world serves perfectly for a story about a young boy from an abusive background who gets to escape the doldrums of suburban England and jet off to wizarding school.
