I have not always been the biggest fan of J.J. Abrams.  Still, he managed to earn a lot of my respect with his faithful reboot of Star Trek, despite his insane over use of lens flair.  After Star Trek: Into Darkness, I now have considerable faith in Mr. Abrams ability to direct Star Wars VII, especially after reading this interview about his own vision and feelings of concern regarding the Star Wars franchise.

Seriously though, if he over uses lens flair again, he and I are going to have words.

This week brings us very sad news. Hiroshi Yamauchi, former president of Nintendo and the man who brought the company into the video game industry, has passed away. Yamauchi took over the company at just 22 and promptly fired all of the executives left over from his grandfather’s tenure because they didn’t think he could do the job (he totally had the last laugh there). He stepped down as president in 2002 and passed away this week at age 85.

This man helped give me hours of joy and frustration.

Interesting side note, Mr. Yamauchi was the owner of the Seatle Mariners for 12 years and remained a controlling voice until his death. He was the first international owner of a MLB team.

More than once we’ve talked about all of the different things in which Elon Musk has involved himself.  While not all of his endeavors may come to fruition (i.e. the hyperloop), there is no doubt that he is an incredible innovator.  It now seems that Mr. Musk is looking to challenge the automated car.  This seems like a pretty sensible choice for him, given that this technology is already so heavily integrated in Tesla cars.  Musk has stated that they expect to have a 90% automated car in three years and a fully automatic one sometime after that.

Looks like the last hurdle to these cars is state insurance laws. It might be time for some of us to quietly start looking into our options to change them.

This has been a great week for tech announcements. Everyone I know has been talking about the latest Apple Press Conference, but for me the more interesting news came from Sony. They have announced a new preferal called the PS Vita TV. This device allows you play your PS Vita games on your TV using a standard PS3 Dual Shock Controller.

The box will also allow you to stream video services such as Netflix and Hulu and play your PS4 remotely (with a PS4 controller of course).

A while back I wrote about how awesome Greg Rucka’s Queen and Country is. Turns out, actress Ellen Paige is interested in playing British secret agent Tara Chase. Things are still in the early stages, but I’d love to see this project come to life.

Check out Greg Rucka’s optimistic tweet about the news.

Finally, it is the 50th birthday of my top two favorite Marvel comics, X-Men and The Avengers. On September 10, 1963, issue #1 of both books was released. Both books were written by the great Stan Lee, with art from Jack “King” Kirby.

xmen1X-Men is the first comic I ever picked up and The Avengers has become one of my favorite titles, especially under the direction of Johnathan Hickman.

As a geek chick, and the editor of a geek blog, I have noticed a bizarre dichotomy in the geek world.  Intelligent, respectful geeky guys find it exciting, and dare I say sexy, that a woman would be interested in comics, video games (in theory, but that’s another story), science fiction, and other cerebral forms of entertainment.  However, not all men are intelligent and respectful, painful as it is for me to admit.  In honor of these lesser geek-forms, Therefore I Geek presents a special edition of Around the Web.

This comic from Dork Tower is the epitome of an opportunity for a geek guy to (gulp) talk to a female that actually shares his interests and perhaps find some common ground.  If he’s lucky he might even walk away with her phone number (or the URL to her blog /wink).  Instead, he… well, I’ll let you see for yourself:

A perpetual fear, as I prepare for my first comic convention.

It is important to note here that geek women do not consider ourselves goddesses.  However, we DO vehemently argue the validity of our geekhood.  I, myself, am able to talk many geek guys under the table with my knowledge of Lewis and Tolkien (so few have even bothered to read Till We Have Faces that it isn’t that difficult).

Last but not least, my challenge to geek guys is:  if you don’t know about my particular type of geek, please ask!!  As the blog has stated before, every geek wants to talk about their particular passion.  That applies to girls too.  If you can’t quite get up the courage to ask, at least don’t show your ignorance on the internet, because geek women will take you down! 😉

Being judgemental on the interwebs never ends well.

So geek guys, don’t be intimidated!!  There is more acceptance of geek culture than ever before, and with girls finally feeling empowered to embrace their inner geek, this opens up so many possibilities for interaction that involve more common interests and less staring at feet.

With Marvel announcing that James Spader will be playing Ultron in 2015’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, we at Therefore I Geek felt it fitting to start off this week’s Around the Web with a short history of Ultron, coming to us from the good folks at Wired.com.  Ultron is one of my favorite Avengers villains.  The whole idea that he is basically Hank Pym gone completely mental appeals to me, especially when Ant Man and Wasp are a part of the Avengers.

Seriously though, this guy is a homicidal robot?…Okay, maybe they’re on to something here.

Apparently Nintendo has decided it’s time to move backwards in technology. Nintendo is releasing a new 2DS, which is basically their 3DS, only without the 3D functionality.  As well as the 3DS is doing, I have to wonder why they’re doing this.  I have a 3DS and while I rarely use the 3D, it’s still pretty cool to have from time to time, especially for cut scenes.

On the up side, Nintendo did put some thought into the system and reviews say it has a good feel and balance, which is important in a handheld console, though it doesn’t fold like previous systems.

Thanks to Miley Cyrus’ antics at the MTV’s Video Music Awards this week, twerking has now made its way into the Oxford English Dictionary. You might ask yourself why this is worth of your attention, and the following video would be the reason why.

Morgan Freeman could narrate just about any part of my life, and I would love every minute of it.
