Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith, is now the focus of his very own comic from Marvel. While this is only the first issue, I am pretty pleased and am looking forward to seeing where the rest of the series is going.

The comic picks up shortly after the events of Star Wars #2 and not long after A New Hope, with Vader trying to enforce the Emperor’s will after the destruction of the Death Star. The book opens with Vader paying a visit to the notorious gangster Jabba the Hutt on behalf of the Emperor, after Jabba’s emissary was intercepted and replaced by Han Solo in Star Wars. Vader is a day early, however, and has a personal matter which he would like to address with the Hutt gangster. Kieron Gillen seems to understand Vader’s character much more than Jason Aaron does with Star Wars.  Vader acts and talks exactly the way I would expect him to. In a franchise series like this, where the characters are so well known, it really stands out when characters act and sound contrary to the established norms and it really takes away from the story for fans. The reason that fans buy comics like this is that we want further adventures of our favorite characters.  In order for that to work, they need to be recognizable. Continue reading

Comic Book Copycats

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, or so the old saying goes. While this might be true sometimes, it is just as often the excuse given to justify taking someone else’s ideas and trying to claim them as one’s own. The comic industry is no exception. From the very early days, once a hero started to become popular, it was only a matter of time before someone else was slapping a slightly different costume on an eerily similar creation and packaging it to sell.

Since the release of Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel has been trying to capitalize on its success by releasing several new comic titles that feature Guardians characters. Unlike the very popular Rocket Raccoon, The Legendary Star-Lord has received a far cooler reception and has been middle of the road quality at best. Having said that, I think that issue #8 takes a different tack than previous issues and it pays off. Continue reading

Saturday Reviews: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

While Squirrel Girl may be a D-list superhero, her brand new comic The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is far from being a second string title. For those readers unfamiliar, Squirrel Girl is a Marvel character going back to the grand days of the Great Lakes Avengers. Yes, that was totally a thing. Some of Doreen Green’s blood is squirrel blood, which gives her the proportional strength and speed of a squirrel, as well as a large bushy tail and the ability to talk to squirrels. As a fourth string hero, Squirrel Girl lives in the attic of Avengers Mansion—at least until she begins her new life as a college student at the premiere Marvel Universe institute for higher learning, Empire State University. Of course, as a student she must balance her education with the vigors of saving the world. Continue reading
