BloodBorne, the long awaited successor to the Demon Souls/Dark Souls line-up developed by From Software and directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, is a game that lives up to expectations while also changing the formula of its predecessors enough to make it original. It sports a Victorian Gothic theme of experimentation with natural human chemistry and how experimentation with it eventually makes men beasts. It pulls from the era so well that the story narrative—as well as the visual representation—really calls to the popular stories of the 1900s and the curiosity surrounding the changing medical field, exemplified in books such as The Strange Case Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. As the player kills more beasts in the game, his clothing gets completely covered in blood. To further the feeling of the lycanthropic, scent is a pervasive concept in the conversations with non-player characters. Continue reading

Developer Spotlight: Mobage/DeNA
About a year ago, I was told I should check out a mobile game called Blood Brothers, which I downloaded and intended to give an honest month’s play to see if it were any good. Almost a year later, I am still playing this game. Like any good mobile app developer, this one advertises their other games on splash screens while loading up, but I paid them little mind (does anyone actually click on those things?) until their latest ad, this one for a game called Final Fantasy: Record Keeper. I was intrigued enough to take a look at all the games this developer has created, and was surprised to see that they carry some pretty big brands. Their impressive list of titles includes Transformers Battle Tactics, Marvel Mighty Heroes, Star Wars Galactic Defense, and the latest Final Fantasy offering from Square-Enix. These names have been known all over the world for decades now, and for one developer to have use of all of these intellectual properties at one time is quite an accomplishment. Continue reading

Since then I ran across this article from BGR.com and this one from Rockpapershotgun.com which gave similar warnings against blindly purchasing games. The writers of these pieces advise their readers to never pre-order games because it is leading to an unhealthy consumer environment. I found their perspective to be mostly accurate, but I think that the situation requires a little more clarification, which is why I am addressing it here. Continue reading

Old School Pizza: Nostalgia Done Right

While most of my friends were complaining about the cold snap over New Year’s holiday, I was fortunate enough to be vacationing in Florida. I should mention that I’m a big foodie, so when I go anywhere I prefer to find local spots to fill my belly with new experiences. One night during my sojourn, I found myself craving pizza and I asked the friend I was staying with if there were any local pizza places. His answer was no, which wasn’t really surprising given that we were in an area of the country that has a large population of retirees, but I must admit that his disconsolate face harshed my party buzz. What is a fellow to do?
