The PaladinThe Paladin #0
Written by Chris Antzoulis
Illustrated by Bruno Oliveira

A year and a half ago, I picked up a copy of The Paladin #1 for the first time at TWCC and really enjoyed the beginning of a brand new series–and it was the beginning of publication.  However, The Paladin #0 is the chronological beginning of that journey.  In this book, the writer is telling the story of two brothers caught in the same situation two years apart.  They are both being asked to join a group of very official looking men who appear to be government agents of some kind.  One is a powerful telekinetic, and the other has a gift that is never expressed. Saturday Review: From Under Mountains

From Under Mountains 1From Under Mountains (Image)
Writers: Claire Gibson and Marian Churchland
Artist: Sloane Leong

It’s no secret that we at Therefore I Geek are fantasy fans. And while Tracy is more of one than I am, I am by no means a slacker. The biggest difference is that while she gets her kicks from novels that usually weigh more than a newborn, I tend to go a bit more lightweight and go for comics (shocking, I’m sure). Weekend Review: Unit 44

From time to time, I come across an independent or small press comic that really blows my mind with humor and art.  Locke and Key was one such experience.  Unit 44 is another.

The artistic style of this book is very bright, simple, and playful, which really matches the silly story and humor.  Rather than being realistic the characters are caricatures, and drawn two dimensionally, in a style reminiscent of Archer.  The color palette continues the cartoon theme, using lots of bright primary colors.  Even panels in which the characters are in dark, federal offices or interrogation rooms, the grays and blacks are broken by bright hair colors or even surprising uses of blue and violet. Saturday Review: The Mighty Thor by Walter Simonson, Vol. 1

thorThe Might Thor (Marvel)
Written and Art by Walter Simonson

Over the last eight years there have been a small handful of comics that have peaked my interests so much that I had to read as much as I could as quickly as possible. Books like Saga, Transmetropolitan, and The Dark Knight Returns rank among the top of that elite group. Lately however, a new run of comics has been added to that list in the shape of The Mighty Thor Vol. 1 by Walt Simonson.

It’s no secret that Simonson’s run on Thor is one of the most highly regarded run on any superhero comic, and potentially the best run on Thor period. Having said that I hadn’t gotten around to reading it yet. I’d read the first few issues of the J. Michael Straczynski run, which brought Thor back from the dead, but was unimpressed past about issue #3. It wasn’t until Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic’s run on Thor: God of Thunder that I really developed an interest in the characters. The more I began to talk about Aaron’s run, the more people kept asking if I had read Simonson’s work. A couple weeks ago I finally broke down and bought the first trade. Continue reading
