Comic Review: Sheriff of Babylon #1

The Sheriff of Babylon (Vertigo)
Writer: Tom King
Art: Mitch Gerads

Disclaimer: I absolutely love everything that Tom King has ever published, and I’ve been waiting for this book to come out for several months.  I absolutely adore crime/military dramas in entertainment, but I am also very picky about details.  I am one of the few people I know who will watch Criminal Minds for five straight hours, and criticize every detail that seems unlikely or violates normal protocols.  King writes about what he knows, and he keeps details thin, rather than making up filler that may be an inaccurate description of the world in which he is writing. Saturday Review: Extraordinary X-Men #1

extraordinary 1
Extraordinary X-Men (Marvel)
Writer Jeff Lemire

It is a rare book indeed that makes me like Storm. And yet here I sit, thinking about how much I enjoyed Storm in Extraordinary X-Men #1, one of the many, post-Secret Wars books that Marvel is starting to put out.

When one thinks about everything bad that has happened to mutants over the years, this is not really a surprise, but Storm’s attitude makes me feel like this is something different. Continue reading

Love. The Fox (Magnetic Press)
Written by Frederic Brrémaud
Illustrated by Federico Bertolucci

From time to time I find myself staring at my double screens in my basement office, wondering why I’m not lying in the grass on an island paradise and watching the fauna go about their daily business.  Then I opened the pages of Love. The Fox and I was there!  This book is reminiscent of all the beautiful, animal stories that I read as a child (The Jungle Book, Cinnabar the One O’clock Fox, and Redwall all come to mind).  From the first pages, I was enchanted. Saturday Review: Doctor Strange #1

Dr StrangeDoctor Strange (Marvel)
Written by Jason Aaron
Pencils and Colors by Chris Bachalo

As we near the end of Marvel’s Secret Wars, we are slowly seeing the influx of new books coming out. One such book is Doctor Strange, appearing in his first solo series in many years. While I’m uncertain how Secret Wars will transition into this particular book, I’m rather pleased with what I’ve seen so far. Continue reading
