Geeks You Should Know: Gwendoline Christie

The geek community reserves a special place in its collective heart for those members of the entertainment industry who share the geeky mindset—particularly those who fly their banner high.  One such thespian is Gwendoline Christie, who is best known for her acting role as Brienne of Tarth in HBO’s Game of Thrones.  Christie was born in the UK and grew up in a small village near South Downs.  Her first love was gymnastics and she trained semi-professionally for most of her childhood until a spinal injury forced her to retire and find a career elsewhere.  Her high school drama coach, actor and author Simon Callow, mentored Christie and guided her into theatrical, and then on-screen acting, and she graduated from Drama Centre London in 2005.

Editorial | Does Geek Culture Hold the Answers to National Security?

For this post, I collaborated with Hannah Givens, from Things Matter (which you should totally check out).  Our mutual love of international relations shines through everything we do, apparently.

Technological innovation raises some obvious questions. What kind of technology will humans use in the future? How will it work and what will it do for us? How will it change the way we do things? Those questions are, perhaps, at their most controversial in the realm of national security, where technology can kill (or protect) ever-greater numbers of people. Fortunately, geek culture is an oracle of war. Science fiction has been imagining the future for a long time now, and was already providing possible answers before national security experts even understood the questions. Continue reading

Editorial | Review: Horns

***** SPOILER ALERT *****

This review will be discussing plot points which may be considered spoilers. Consider yourselves warned.

When I first realized that a movie based on a novel by Joe Hill was coming to theaters October 31, my interest was piqued.  I hadn’t read Horns, but I have read some of his other stuff, including Locke & Key, which is gothic mystery/fantasy graphic novel series set in New England.  Sadly, the big screen interpretation of his book, while visually stunning, was disappointing.
