About a year ago, I was told I should check out a mobile game called Blood Brothers, which I downloaded and intended to give an honest month’s play to see if it were any good. Almost a year later, I am still playing this game. Like any good mobile app developer, this one advertises their other games on splash screens while loading up, but I paid them little mind (does anyone actually click on those things?) until their latest ad, this one for a game called Final Fantasy: Record Keeper. I was intrigued enough to take a look at all the games this developer has created, and was surprised to see that they carry some pretty big brands. Their impressive list of titles includes Transformers Battle Tactics, Marvel Mighty Heroes, Star Wars Galactic Defense, and the latest Final Fantasy offering from Square-Enix. These names have been known all over the world for decades now, and for one developer to have use of all of these intellectual properties at one time is quite an accomplishment. Continue reading

The Demise of the Video Game Review
A few months ago I warned against the holiday video game buying spree. Since then I ran across this article from BGR.com and this one from Rockpapershotgun.com which gave similar warnings against blindly purchasing games. The writers of these pieces advise their readers to never pre-order games because it is leading to an unhealthy consumer environment. I should mention that I’m a big foodie, so when I go anywhere I prefer to find local spots to fill my belly with new experiences. One night during my sojourn, I found myself craving pizza and I asked the friend I was staying with if there were any local pizza places. His answer was no, which wasn’t really surprising given that we were in an area of the country that has a large population of retirees, but I must admit that his disconsolate face harshed my party buzz. What is a fellow to do?

Video Game Review: Lords of the Fallen
Lords of the Fallen is a third-person action/adventure game that is available for PS4, XBoxOne, and PC. It is comparable in game-play to Dark Souls. In fact, Lords of the Fallen has garnered a reputation as “Souls lite.” Yes, they did a lot of heavy leaning on Dark Souls, but Deck 13 was clearly influenced by a smattering of other games that gave this game a different feel altogether. Some elements of the characters came from God of War, and the ornate weapons and armor are similar to designs in World of Warcraft or Diablo. The castles and snowy mountain setting really reminded me of Skyrim, and the gauntlet pick-up and scattered audio logs that play without pausing the action hearken back to Dead Space.
