Happy Star Wars Day! (Geek Holidays You Should Celebrate)

So it’s THAT day today.  Star Wars Day.  May the 4th be with you–one of the groan-worthiest puns of all time–has gone from a mere play on words to an internationally celebrated day of geeky merriment.  Annually on this date, those bastions of local, geeky fun, comic book stores often have cosplay events, and there are perhaps hundreds of sales on Star Wars related memorabilia, games, apps, and other cool stuff all over the internet and in physical stores. Around the Web April 17, 2015

All the biggest geek news this week seems to be about upcoming movie trailers.  First on the list was the new teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was released online yesterday and was pretty much the only thing anyone talked about for several hours.  As with many such things in this era of YouTube, a rash of reaction videos very quickly emerged, but none were quite so good as this mashup of the trailer juxtaposed with a scene from Interstellar in which Matthew McConaughey cries–now appearing as though the tears were in reaction to the trailer.

Starting a New Hobby

Everyone needs a hobby. Doesn’t really matter what it is, hobbies help people relax and deal with the stresses that everyday life brings. Personally, I have several, and they have changed over the years as my interests have changed. Most recently I have started playing Magic: The Gathering. So how does one go about getting into a new hobby? Personally I have never had a shortage of things I’m interested in doing. The process of starting a new hobby is easy. First, of course, I have to find out about the pastime. Sometimes I discover a new interest because my friends are into it. Other times I might stumble across it accidentally on the internet, radio, or TV. Regardless of where I found it, it now has my attention. Continue reading

Same $%^&, Different Day

Several years ago, staff writer Joseph De Paul, better known as Dude, and I were hanging out with one of our professors when the topic of comedians came up. At the time there was a big huff about Dane Cook being accused of stealing jokes and so Dude posed the question “If Dane Cook stealing jokes is wrong, how do you justify someone like Sergio Leone basically ripping off Yojimbo to make A Fistful of Dollars?” Our professor paused for a moment and then replied, “Well, Leone is a genius, and Dane Cook [insert XXX rated act].” Dane Cook insults aside, our professor hit on something much deeper than stolen jokes: the idea that there are no new stories.
