Review: Batman: The Long Halloween plus Special Giveaway

With Halloween just a few days away, I thought it’d be a good time to take a look back at Batman: The Long Halloween.  Written by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale, this is a classic Batman story with film noir feel.  Loeb crafts a masterful mix of hardboiled crime, mystery, and superheroes without making any of these elements feel like they are out of place. Yet despite this expert craftsmanship, there are things in this book that could do with some improvement.

Batman: The Long Halloween was originally printed in thirteen monthly issues, starting in October 1996, and wrapping up the following October.  The story follows Batman as he attempts to discover the identity of Holiday, a murderer who is killing members of Gotham’s crime families on holidays, starting with the murder of Johnny Viti, nephew of mafioso Carmine Falcone, on Halloween.  Thus begins a yearlong hunt by Batman, Captain Jim Gordon, and District Attorney Harvey Dent.  The story takes some wonderful twists and turns as the year progresses, which leads to its eventual conclusion. The final twist is good enough that I won’t spoil it for you, but rest assured that it is one of the better ones I’ve seen in quite a while.

By far the best part of this book was Jeph Loeb’s story telling.  In the forward to the edition I own, Loeb says that much of the credit for the book goes to Archie Goodwin, former editor of DC, for pushing Loeb to tell a noir story about the Gotham crime families set in the Batman: Year One time period.  If this is true, and I have no reason to doubt that it is, Loeb took a good idea and ran with it as hard and fast as he could.

The characterizations of rival gangsters Carmine Falcone and Sal Maroni is fantastic. Both men see themselves as legitimate business men and try to conduct themselves as such when in public. They often attend events together and quietly trade barbs even as they rage and plot against each other behind closed doors.  Not only are these characters fully fleshed out, but so are the secondary characters that surround them. The only real issue with this is that at times it feels like a few plot points are being taken right from The Godfather.  For instance, the opening scene at a wedding and the inclusion of a son who is not involved in the family “business”.  While these points take different turns in Long Halloween than they do in The Godfather, I do wish that Loeb had taken the opportunity to write new, fresh material, instead of borrowing from the most well-known Mafia story that exists.

Not only is The Long Halloween a good noir crime story, it is also a solid Batman story. Long Halloween has my two favorite elements of a Batman comic:  plenty of costumed villains and Batman showing off his investigative abilities.  Batman has always been known as “the detective,”—which is fitting given the fact that he first appeared in Detective Comics—and he is always at his best when he is fulfilling that role.  The mystery portion of Long Halloween provides a great opportunity for Batman to test his skills as a detective.  While the story doesn’t focus much on this aspect, it is still constantly there, most often expressed through Bruce’s inner monologue.

Of course, what would a Batman story be without his usual cast of costumed adversaries? For my money, no one beats out Batman for the best rogues gallery (That includes Flash.  Deal with it.), and Long Halloween has no shortage of them. Almost every major Batman villain gets at least a cameo at some point and others play a much more leading role.

As always, the Joker is present and is more a force of chaos than anything else. He is as clueless about the identity of Holiday as everyone else is, but figures that by killing everyone at a New Year’s Eve celebration in Gotham Square he stands a pretty good chance to taking Holiday out. Joker isn’t too fond of the competition for Gotham’s craziest citizen.

By far the most interesting of the villains is Catwoman. Loeb takes full advantage of the Year One setting and really takes the time to explore the beginnings of this complex relationship.  While Bruce is obviously involved with Selina Kyle, Batman has a back and forth with Catwoman which frequently mirrors the interactions between Bruce and Selina. We know that eventually Batman figures out that Catwoman and Selina are the same person, but at least for now it’s really quite interesting watching these two interact, completely unaware of who the other is.

My biggest complaint when it comes to the story involves Harvey Dent. The origin of Two-Face is one of the most over told origin stories in the Batman franchise and at this point, I can really do without another retelling.  Admittedly this was written in 1996 and at the time it might not have been so over used, but unfortunately it is now 2013 and the story is played out. Yes, it would have required some things to be done differently, but I feel that showing the darkness in Harvey and using it to foreshadow what we all know to be inevitable would have been far more powerful.  It is also odd to me that they always seem to shoehorn his transformation in very near the end of a story.  In Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight we also see the transformation of Dent, and like Long Halloween it is very near the end of the story.  Creators do this otherwise well written origin a disservice by rushing through and not allowing it to fully develop.

When it comes to Tim Sale’s art, I find it to be hit and miss.  Sale is a very talented artist, and this story provides several opportunities for him to show off.  There are plenty of spectacular double page spreads that really enhance the story.  I’m also quite fond of the murder scenes which are done in black and grey, except for the blood and the holiday themed trinket that is left behind (not always in color, but it looks better when they are).  While I’m not overly thrilled with the choice of color palette, I freely admit it works with the story and doesn’t take anything away.

There are two areas where I find the art falling short. First is some of Sale’s women. When Sale wants to make a woman look beautiful, like Selina Kyle, then he succeeds with flying colors, making them truly appealing. On the other hand, when Sale attempts to make a woman look ugly or unattractive they just look poorly drawn. Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine, more often looks like a poorly depicted drag queen than a woman.  I found it distracting and it removed me from the story several times.

My second issue is the inking. Since there is no separate artist listed as inker, one can only assume that Sale was inking his own work.  I think that Sale was attempting to use ink to convey a noir feeling, but there are many examples where he takes it too far and the panel becomes confusing.  Several times it took far too long for me to figure out what was going on panel to panel when there was no dialogue to help guide the story.  Really great art should be able to tell the story easily, without dialogue or narration.

Even with its shortcomings, I would highly recommend Batman: The Long Halloween. It’s a great noir story with superheroes mixed in. While Loeb and Sale have teamed up on other Batman works, this is still the strongest of their partnerships.  With this in mind, I’m pleased to announce that we will be giving away an Absolute Edition of Batman: The Long Halloween. Editorial | Review: Angry Birds Star Wars II

This past week I have discovered the new Angry Birds Star Wars II game, which is based on the prequel Star Wars movies.  There are a lot of cool, new features on this game that I have not seen on previous Angry Birds games.  Here is a quick review to get you started.

Mapping sequences are prettier AND collecting a map in certain levels gives the player bonus levels.

First of all, this game is visually far more appealing than any previous Angry Birds game (and I have played them all—I’m mildly obsessed).  This is saying quite a bit, because I found the Angry Birds Rio game to be bright and fun.  The mapping sequences in between levels are now actually shown through animation each time the player completes a level, which makes it easier to feel a sense of accomplishment.  In previous versions of the game, a player could work through an entire map of fifteen levels without realizing how far they had gotten.

The individual levels also feature stunning graphics.  The original Star Wars Angry Birds game took place primarily in space and was dark, and sometimes boring.  The levels released so far in this edition all take place on planets, and the scenery really is beautiful.

Angry Birds kept one of the innovations from the first Star Wars game, which I feel had been a big improvement:  visible paths for birds before they are actually fired.  Since firing birds from a slingshot in space can be tricky business—especially considering magnetic and gravitational fields—this is very helpful.

The talents of some of the various birds available have been reinvented, which is a lot of fun.  For instance, at a quick tap of the screen, the Jar-Jar Binks character shoots out a long sticky tongue to grab hold of either a fixed object in order to swing out and hit something, or a moveable object to drag it with the force of the bird’s inertia through the air.  I have to admit that it has taken me several tries to perfect using this character.

Also, the Yoda character now spins like a… well, like a tiny green Jedi.  At a tap, he will spin violently, and bounce off objects to quickly take out whole sections of evil, Sith-pigs.

Perhaps my favorite innovation, however, is the fact that a player can now choose whether to play as a Jedi bird, or as a Pork Side pig.  After playing through two or three levels as a Jedi, the game will prompt the player to decide if they would like to continue using the Force for good, or whether they would like to go to the Dark Side.  Fortunately, unlike Anakin’s choice, the player’s decision need not be permanent, as the player can choose either side of the Force at any time from the main menu.

Once the two maps that are currently available have been completed from both the Jedi and Pork Side perspectives, players can also go to another screen and choose individual levels with only one type of bird.  This is a really nice way for the Angry Birds team to ensure that players have plenty to work on while they wait for the next few maps to be released.

The game has me completely addicted at this point.  I definitely recommend it to any fan of Angry Birds OR Star Wars.  It’s a great time filler for just about anywhere—just avoid being obvious about playing it in Economics class… not that I know from personal experience!Screenshot_2013-10-17-16-29-35

Recap: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Last night’s premier of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was pretty much exactly both what I expected and hoped.  All in all it was not mind-blowing, but it was solid.  I’m hoping that this means the series will be able to sustain this level of writing, acting, etc.

SPOILER ALERT:  A brief recap of last night’s episode follows.

First, in the world’s worst kept secret, Agent Coulson, who was killed right before the Avenger’s final battle scene, is apparently alive.  I say apparently, because there is clearly something that the viewers have not been told yet.  We know that there is something that the viewers have not yet been told, because Agent Hill (How I Met Your Mother’s Cobie Smulders, reprising her role from the Avengers movie) comments to Agent Ward that there is something Coulson doesn’t know about himself.  My theory?  Agent Coulson is actually a life model decoy–a pretty standard ploy by Nick Fury.

Clearly, viewers would have been too dull to notice the way Coulson repeated the exact same description of his recuperation vacation to Tahiti several times during the episode—always a sure sign that a character has been brainwashed.  “It was magical.”

It was fantastic, as a Joss Whedon fan, to see J. August Richards again.  Charles Gunn was one of my very favorite characters from Angel.  An appearance by Ron Glass (Shepherd Book, from Firefly and Serenity) was also a pleasure.

The storyline itself felt very much like a “Joss production.”  S.H.I.E.L.D. is assembling a team of crack experts to find out what is going on with a rebellious hacker-type group calling itself Rising Tide.  As near as I could tell, this seems to be mostly consisting of one single girl named Skye.  She has located a thirty-something male who is showing superhuman abilities, but without any official superhero moniker—which is clearly against regulations.

After she is captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. and exchanges some witty banter with the interrogating agents, she realizes they are all on the same side and they work together to save the poor, lost superhero—who isn’t so super after all.

The show wraps up its plot nicely (Thank you, Joss, for making a more episodic series than a serial!) with a ride to the airport in Coulson’s flying car.

Good to see old friends again!

Although some are criticizing the pilot as a good episode, not a great one, I think that I would rather have good writing throughout the season, rather than a shock-and-awe pilot, with mediocre filling for the next few weeks.

One thing is for sure, I’ll be tuning in next week.  Until then, check out ABC’s companion web series for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Review: Dark Star

“…instead of the most impressive student film ever made, we had the least impressive professional film ever made”. This is how writer Dan O’Bannon described Dark Star, a zany space adventure that is far more influential to both film makers and the movie going public than most people are aware. The plot follows the crew of the deep space scout ship Dark Star as they travel the galaxy looking for unstable planets to demolish. As they continue their travels, their ship is falling apart around them, and due to their near light speed transits only three years has passed for them.

This is one of my favorite B movies, hands down. It hits me in all the right places, from campy humor to science fiction adventure. It also tickles my geek fancy because so many people who became famous later were involved with this movie early in their career. There is lots of geek trivia to be found in this film. Although it was a student film that was expanded into a full length feature, as a B movie, the effects, writing and acting are really of a higher than expected quality.

Dark Star was a stepping stone in the career of one of Hollywood’s most prolific, though maybe not best, directors. Originally, it was the master thesis for John Carpenter, later known for movies such as Halloween and Escape from New York. This movie really set the tone for the B movies for which Carpenter would become known and established a higher bar when it came to quality of B movies in the 70’s.  Movies don’t necessarily have to be good to have an impact.  Low budget films are often the perfect place for new talent to make their name.

By today’s standards, Dark Star’s effects are unimpressive and beyond antiquated, but it was released in 1974, three years before Star Wars was released and changed the special effects game. While the movie obviously produced by people who were just starting out in their field of, the effects are campy without being over the top or just plain bad.  Rather than try to be overly ambitious, the movie creators chose to stick with simple ones that could be pulled off with relative ease. Many of these effects were designed by Ron Cobb who would later gain notoriety for his work as a conceptual designer on many blockbuster films such as Star Wars, The Abyss, and of course Alien.

Dark Star is the first film written by Dan O’Bannon, who would later go on to write Alien and Return of the Living Dead (the first movie in which zombies crave brains). The characters are reasonably well developed, especially O’Bannon’s own character of Pinback.  As it turns out, Pinback isn’t actually Pinback.  Instead he is Fuel Specialist Bill Frugge who was wearing Pinback’s spacesuit after the real Pinback committed suicide. When it came time for launch Frugge couldn’t figure out how to work the spacesuit’s radio to inform people that he wasn’t Pinback so he got shipped off instead.  Being out of place, Pinback provides an amusing commentary on events and a significant lack of professionalism.

Dark Star also provides a believable look into what life would be like for a crew stuck on a small spaceship for three years.  The ship is falling apart, crew members have died, and those that remain have to stave off boredom and attempt to maintain their sanity.  One crew member spends all his time in an observation dome look out at the stars and Pinback himself has adopted a pet alien.

The alien is played by a painted beach ball with rubber monster claws for feet. The seams of the beach ball are even still visible underneath the paint. Despite this, the alien is still one of the best elements of this movie.  The scenes in which Pinback chases the alien through the ventilation system later became the inspiration for Alien.  (Dark Star is basically the story of truck drivers in space as a dark comedy, whereas Alien makes that same idea into a beautiful horror film.)  So while the beach ball alien bears no resemblance to the Xenomorph, it is, in fact, its early ancestor.

There is very little about this film that I don’t enjoy.  However, there are several times where the dialogue is too quiet because of that what is going on in the scene becomes lost. Since the plot is pretty thin that start this only serves to add confusion. The space suits are another complaint of mine. Most of the suit is fine—especially for low budget science fiction—but the chest pieces on both space suits are baking pans. I’m not joking here. One is most definitely a muffin pan and the other is a deep metal baking pan with an air filter attached to it. I know these guys were working with a limited budget, but have to believe that they could have scraped together an extra 20 bucks for some kind of busted electronics they could have used instead of such obviously recognizable household items.

Dark Star is a B movie to be sure, but it is one of the truly outstanding ones. The number of people who got their starts on this movie and the other movies it has spawned or been referenced by gives this movie a longevity that would not be expected of what is essentially an overgrown student film. With everything that Dark Star has to offer, I give it 4.5 Death Stars.
