It’s no secret that I’m a Marvel guy. However, although I love the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avengers and even Guardians of the Galaxy, aside from a short run by Rick Remender, I’ve never been much of a Captain America fan. I enjoyed the first Captain America movie, but I wasn’t blown away by it, and it didn’t really do anything to spark my interest in the character. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, on the other hand, has started to change my mind. Continue reading

It’s Friday, thank the maker.

One of Hollywood’s biggest fanboys, Patton Oswalt is going to be guest starring on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Oswalt, whose standup routines frequently feature references to geek culture, will play Agent Erik Koenig. Details about the character’s role in the show are still unclear, but Koenig as a comic book character dates back to 1966 with Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos.

Oswalt’s rant from Parks and Recreation is one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard, so I’m looking forward to seeing him on Agents, especially now that I’ve found my cable remote and have caught up on the show.

Slowly but surely Marvel has been leaking out little bits of information about 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Fans have recently gotten some nice clues, including what Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will look like and a brand new teaser trailer that shows Iron Man’s helmet turning into Ultron’s head. One can only assume this is some hint at how Ultron will come into being.

I’m really glad Marvel is putting out a couple of movies a year now, because I don’t think I could wait till next summer without losing my mind if there weren’t other stuff to keep me occupied.

Wrapping things up is today’s Follow Friday (#FF):   Jordan and Eddie (The Movie Guys). Eddie has provided us with his list of Steven Spielberg’s ten greatest films.  I’ve got to say I agree with Eddie for most of this list.  I don’t know that I would have included A.I.: Artificial Intelligence–though it’s been a long time since I’ve seen that movie so I may not remember how good it is. I also didn’t realize exactly how often John Williams composes for Steven Spielberg.

I would also like to know where The Animaniacs would fall on Eddie’s list.

Name That (Comic) Character: Answer

And our mystery character is…

moonknight1

Moon Knight in a very Batman-esqe pose.

Moon Knight

1) This character was created in 1975.

Moon Knight was created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin, first appearing in Werewolf by Night #32 (August 1975).

2) S/he has been a periodic member of secondary Avengers teams.

Moon Knight has been a member of both the West Coast Avengers and Secret Avengers.

3) The character has been written by Ed Brubaker and Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Bill Sienkiewicz and David Finch.

Brubaker wrote Secret Avengers, Bendis wrote Moon Knight, Vol. 6, Sienkiewicz pencilled Moon Knight, Vol. 1, and Finch pencilled Moon Knight, Vol. 4

4) This character has often been described by fellow characters as having psychological problems.

Adopting multiple alter egos as well as believing himself to be the avatar of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu have taken a toll on Moon Knight’s sanity and resulted in his suffering from dissociative identity disorder.

5) This sometime Avenger is Jewish.

Moon Knight is the son of a rabbi.

6) S/he has had significant military training.

Marc Spencer (aka Moon Knight) served in the US Marine Corps and worked as a mercenary.

7) Although this character is from Marvel, fans commonly consider her/him to be a knockoff of a DC character.

Moon Knight is often thought of as a Batman knockoff, though there are differences in characterization.

8) S/he has, at times, also wielded supernatural powers (but doesn’t normally have them).

Moon Knight was the Fist of Khonshu when he was possessed by the spirit of Khonshu and had temporary supernatural powers as a result.

Did you guess right? Congratulations to luna for their correct guess. Now go check out Moon Knight Vol.7, #1 out in comic books stores this week.

Good news for all of you Calvin & Hobbes fans out there. Reclusive creator Bill Watterson is finally releasing new public work.  Watterson has created the poster for Stripped, a new documentary film that discusses the state of comic strips and features interviews with a few of my personal favorite cartoonists, such as Danielle Corsetto (Girls with Slingshots), Jim Davis (Garfield) and Bill Amend (Foxtrot).

I can’t believe it’s been almost TWENTY years since the last Calvin & Hobbes strip… I feel old now.

Marvel and Netflix have announced that their new, original series will be shot in New York City.  The four previously announced series will feature Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist.  A fifth series will include all four heroes teaming up as The Defenders (think Avengers, but on a less global scale). This does, of course, mean that once again the Big Apple will get the crap kicked out of it by super-powered villains.

If they were actually rebuilding New York as often the comics would have us believe, I think that the roads would be in far better shape.

With the latest sales numbers putting Xbox One solidly in second place behind the PS4, Microsoft has recently been considering cutting the price of the Xbox One. Conventional thinking says this is probably a good idea, since the Xbox One costing $100 more than the PS4 is probably a significant factor in the sales figure differences. At least one person, Erik Kain of Forbes, doesn’t agree with this. Kain thinks that maintaining the price, but selling the system in bundle packages with games is the best route. This will maintain the profitability of the console without significantly increasing costs for Microsoft, as well as helping to promote their big-name, exclusive titles, like Titanfall.

What I found most interesting is that some people are actually pushing for Microsoft to dump the Xbox brand entirely. Even if the console is sitting at number two, I can’t fathom why they would do that.
