Do What You Love

I don’t think I can ever stress enough the value of doing things you love. I consider myself a very lucky person given that I have a job that I love, which in turns allows me to do things outside of work that I also love. And while I do consider myself lucky, luck was not the only factor that has contributed to this. Anyone who thinks that much of this hasn’t been by design is kidding themselves.

Often times that design has meant doing things I didn’t want to do or didn’t enjoy, just because I knew they would get me where I wanted to be. It’s a positive version of “the ends justify the means.” I spent four and a half years in military school because it was one of a select few places that offered the degree I wanted, and I knew the school would give me a leg up when I was done. There were plenty of times I was absolutely miserable and was on the verge of giving up. I had to look deep down and determine if what I wanted in the end was worth what I was going though. I determined that it was, but if it wasn’t, I’d have walked away in a heartbeat. Continue reading

My Favorite Trek Episodes – DS9 “The Homecoming”, “The Circle” and “The Siege”

DS9

With yesterday’s announcement of a brand new Star Trek series premiering in 2017, I felt it was time to share another of my favorite Star Trek episodes. This time around I’m going to cheat a little and talk about three of them, “The Homecoming,” “The Circle,” and “The Siege” from Deep Space Nine. This trio of episodes focuses around the return of Bajoran war hero Li Nalas during a time of serious upheaval as the Bajoran Provisional Government begins to fall apart and civil war looms. Kickstarter Q&A with Joe Badon

Since starting Therefore I Geek, we’ve had the good fortune to be able to share quality independant projects that are in need of a little crowdfunding. Recently we had the oppurtunity to discuss one such project, The Man With Ten Thousand Eyes, with its creator  Joe Badon. Make sure to head on over and support Joe and his project.

Therefore I Geek: Why don’t you tell us a little about yourself to get started?

Joe Badon: My name is Joe Badon. I’m 38 years old. I live in Slidell, Louisiana (where I was born and raised). It’s just outside of New Orleans.
I’ve been a freelance illustrator since 2008. I have a wife and two teenager girls (and a dog).

TIG: How did you get into comics?

JB: I started reading comics at a pretty young age. My dad had Zapp Comix and underground hippie comics and my older brother had Marvel and DC Comics. I always leaned toward the weirder stuff. Continue reading

Adventures in GMing

Not that long ago I allowed myself to be talked into doing something I had never done before. In fairness it didn’t really take all that much convincing. Mostly a lighthearted conversation and a little bit of gentle flattery and I was hooked. It was something I’d been looking into for a while, and everything just fell into place. I am referring of course to my first attempts as a Game Master.

Roll Initiative!

As I just mentioned, being part of a roleplaying group was something that I had been interesting in for quite some time. It just seems like the next logical step, to jump into one of my fandoms and be a part of the story instead of a passive observer. I had initially planned to be just a participant and not actually the one running the game, but as I have frequently learned, things rarely go according to plan. This is also not the first time I’ve attempted to get a gaming group going. Unfortunately, previous attempts were foiled by massive scheduling issues across the board. Continue reading
