Good news for all of you Calvin & Hobbes fans out there. Reclusive creator Bill Watterson is finally releasing new public work.  Watterson has created the poster for Stripped, a new documentary film that discusses the state of comic strips and features interviews with a few of my personal favorite cartoonists, such as Danielle Corsetto (Girls with Slingshots), Jim Davis (Garfield) and Bill Amend (Foxtrot).

I can’t believe it’s been almost TWENTY years since the last Calvin & Hobbes strip… I feel old now.

Marvel and Netflix have announced that their new, original series will be shot in New York City.  The four previously announced series will feature Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist.  A fifth series will include all four heroes teaming up as The Defenders (think Avengers, but on a less global scale). This does, of course, mean that once again the Big Apple will get the crap kicked out of it by super-powered villains.

If they were actually rebuilding New York as often the comics would have us believe, I think that the roads would be in far better shape.

With the latest sales numbers putting Xbox One solidly in second place behind the PS4, Microsoft has recently been considering cutting the price of the Xbox One. Conventional thinking says this is probably a good idea, since the Xbox One costing $100 more than the PS4 is probably a significant factor in the sales figure differences. At least one person, Erik Kain of Forbes, doesn’t agree with this. Kain thinks that maintaining the price, but selling the system in bundle packages with games is the best route. This will maintain the profitability of the console without significantly increasing costs for Microsoft, as well as helping to promote their big-name, exclusive titles, like Titanfall.

What I found most interesting is that some people are actually pushing for Microsoft to dump the Xbox brand entirely. Even if the console is sitting at number two, I can’t fathom why they would do that.

This week ushered in a new chapter for The Tonight Show.  Jimmy Fallon has taken the helm of the long running late night comedy television show, but far more important for geeks was that the show also debuted the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy. This has quickly become one of my favorite comics and I can’t wait for this movie. I’m not super thrilled that John C. Reilly has been cast as Nova, but I’m willing to go along with it for now. If you haven’t checked the trailer out yet, then take a look below.

There appears to be a healthy mix of action and humor, which has worked well for Marvel so far.

Keeping with the Guardians theme, Rocket Raccoon is one of the best characters on the team. He is a sarcastic, badass raccoon looking alien. What more could you want in a comic book hero?  Sadly, however, his creator, Bill Mantlo is in need of our help. Back in 1992 Mantlo suffered a traumatic brain injury after being struck by a hit-and-run driver and currently resides in a long term care facility in Queens. Mantlo’s story is terribly sad and he is in need of financial help to improve his quality of life, if only just a little.

In the past, older comic creators have gotten the short end of a lot of things. Hopefully we can help prevent that from happening to current and future generations of comic writers and artists.

Do you have any old Star Wars action figures at home? While they could be worth a lot of money, I bet they’re not worth $13,000. Well that’s how much one Star Wars figure went for in a recent auction. The little known FX-7 medical droid figure started off at just under $100, but ended up going for just short of $13,000. A bidding war erupted over the figure due to the incredibly high quality of the “mint in box” figure.

I’m really tempted to go digging through all my old crap suddenly. Is that weird?

And finally, today is actress Sophie Turner’s 18th birthday. Turner is best known for her role as everybody’s least favorite Stark, Sansa, on HBO’s Game of Thrones.

She's 18...get your mind out of the gutter. Perv.

It’s a damn good thing she’s cute, otherwise I’d be rooting for horrible things to happen to Sansa. Ok, maybe I still do.

Around the Web February 7, 2014: Kickstarter Edition

This week Around the Web is doing things a little differently. Instead of the usual interesting finds from all over the internet, I’ve decided to share a number of projects looking for funding on Kickstarter. Some of these projects have already been fully funded and are working towards various stretch goals, while other are in need of our help to get there.

Games

Kombat Kittens – I like cats and I like combat card games so this one feels like a natural fit. Also the card art makes me laugh.

Los Cthuluchadores – I am both disturbed and fascinated by the idea of combining H.P Lovecraft’s classic horror creation and Mexican Luchadores.

Rhythm Metal Gaming Dice – These are high quality gaming dice for those of you who take your D&D seriously.

Customizable 3D Printed Tabletop Miniatures – Again, for those of you hardcore role-players out there, now you can have your own, unique minis. This is a great use of an emerging technology.

Tiny Epic Kingdoms – I like the idea of a game that will fit in the pocket of my cargo pants.

Fief – An update to a French board game that has the potential for games on the same scale as Monopoly or Risk.

Zeppelin Attack! – Who doesn’t like the idea of being a 1920’s super villain in a zeppelin? I know I love the idea.

Film

Brian Remus: Science Genius – This strikes me as Bill Nye meets Office Space.

Audax – These guys are working on a micro-budget and personally I want to see exactly what they can pull off with that. Who knows, maybe we’ll be impressed.

Outerlands: Season One – I’ve already seen several video game based documentaries which were fascinating and this looks like it will be great.

Restore the Rialto Theater – This is a very serious dilemma hitting thousands of small movie houses. We need to help as many as we can. My local theater has been among the lucky ones to successfully make the transition to digital.

Video Games

Stellar Praxis – Grand scale RTS games are kind of my thing. I love Sins of a Solar Empire and would really like it if Sins had some “friends” out there.

Galactic Wars – Big ships beating the crap out of each other.  What’s not to love?

Comics

Psychonaut – Thanks in part to the comic publisher Image, the science fiction comic is making a comeback. This book has a solid look and premises.

Sidekicks – This book looks and feels a lot like Invincible which isn’t a bad thing. Hopefully it will match that look with a good story and some humor.

These are the projects that caught my eye, but there are a ton more available. Let us know which projects you think are worth while and should be spotlighted. And don’t forget to put your money where your mouth is by helping to support some of these folks. I will be.

Around the Web January 31, 2014

Welcome to the end of January! We’ve made it through the first month of a new year and so far so good. Let us celebrate survival with a new Around the Web.

As a grown man, I am not ashamed to say I still play with Legos. When I’m feeling like I really suck at being an engineer, I’ll go pick up a small set and put it together and it usually makes me feel better about my engineering skills.  Now the Lego Cuusoo program has announced a new set I won’t be waiting to get, Ghostbusters. That’s right, everyone’s favorite paranormal investigation and extermination professionals will soon be available in Lego form.

Who you gonna call?

Who you gonna call?

I think I know just the place for them.

BGR is reporting that there is a “verified insider” leaking some very juicy information about the Xbox One’s future. The information first appeared on the NeoGAF forums and gives us some interesting (and hopefully true) tidbits. Among the most interesting is that there is a $399 Xbox One coming, but that it won’t include an optical drive. I’ve got mixed feelings about that. I don’t really need the optical drive for games, as I’ve been embracing digital downloads lately, but having the Xbox as a Blu Ray player would also be nice.

Now we will just have to see how much of this rumor actually turns out to be accurate.

Marvel Universe LIVE! will be a live action stage production featuring many of our favorite Marvel heroes. Marvel has recently released some information concerning the plot and it looks interesting. The show will revolve around members of the Avengers attempting to gain pieces of the Cosmic Cube (the Tesseract from The Avengers and Captain America) so they can defeat Loki. In the process they will battle several other recognizable Marvel villians like Doc Oct, Red Skull and the Green Goblin.

I’m already look at which day I want to go see this. It happens to be coming to a town near me.

What kind of Geeks would we be if we let the 40th birthday of Dungeons and Dragons slip past us without recognition?  For many of us, this is the game that started it all and A Guide to Geekdom provides a nice history of D&D in addition to the author’s own personal experiences with the game.

Personally I haven’t ever played the game, though I’ve recently been looking into finding a group and learning how.
