Saturday Review: Extraordinary X-Men #1

It is a rare book indeed that makes me like Storm. And yet here I sit, thinking about how much I enjoyed Storm in Extraordinary X-Men #1, one of the many, post-Secret Wars books that Marvel is starting to put out.

I’m not sure exactly how this happened, but right from the get-go I found myself thinking how awesome Storm looks. She’s got a great new costume and still retains the bad-ass mohawk. The story also starts off with Storm in an interesting place. She is now headmaster of the Xavier Institute (or whatever the name happens to be in this particular iteration) and things are going badly for mutants. When one thinks about everything bad that has happened to mutants over the years, this is not really a surprise, but Storm’s attitude makes me feel like this is something different. Continue reading

Do What You Love

I don’t think I can ever stress enough the value of doing things you love. I consider myself a very lucky person given that I have a job that I love, which in turns allows me to do things outside of work that I also love. And while I do consider myself lucky, luck was not the only factor that has contributed to this. Anyone who thinks that much of this hasn’t been by design is kidding themselves.

Often times that design has meant doing things I didn’t want to do or didn’t enjoy, just because I knew they would get me where I wanted to be. It’s a positive version of “the ends justify the means.” I spent four and a half years in military school because it was one of a select few places that offered the degree I wanted, and I knew the school would give me a leg up when I was done. There were plenty of times I was absolutely miserable and was on the verge of giving up. I had to look deep down and determine if what I wanted in the end was worth what I was going though. I determined that it was, but if it wasn’t, I’d have walked away in a heartbeat. Continue reading

My Favorite Trek Episodes – DS9 “The Homecoming”, “The Circle” and “The Siege”

With yesterday’s announcement of a brand new Star Trek series premiering in 2017, I felt it was time to share another of my favorite Star Trek episodes. This time around I’m going to cheat a little and talk about three of them, “The Homecoming,” “The Circle,” and “The Siege” from Deep Space Nine. This trio of episodes focuses around the return of Bajoran war hero Li Nalas during a time of serious upheaval as the Bajoran Provisional Government begins to fall apart and civil war looms.
