Happy Star Wars Day! (Geek Holidays You Should Celebrate)

So it’s THAT day today.  Star Wars Day.  May the 4th be with you–one of the groan-worthiest puns of all time–has gone from a mere play on words to an internationally celebrated day of geeky merriment.  Annually on this date, those bastions of local, geeky fun, comic book stores often have cosplay events, and there are perhaps hundreds of sales on Star Wars related memorabilia, games, apps, and other cool stuff all over the internet and in physical stores. Autism and Geek Culture

Today’s blog post was written by an American Sign Language public school teacher who has taught children on the Autism Spectrum, including Gemma, who is pictured here.

As we reach the end of April, we are also reaching the end of Autism Awareness Month. At the beginning of the month social media was bombarded with inspirational memes, stories, and puzzle pieces, but by the end of the month it is not at the forefront of our minds. While I do have a busy life, and I don’t get to play as often as I’d like, I still find that when I have the chance to get out and play a few games, I am in a much better mindset after.

So how does one go about getting into a new hobby? Personally I have never had a shortage of things I’m interested in doing. The process of starting a new hobby is easy. First, of course, I have to find out about the pastime. Sometimes I discover a new interest because my friends are into it. Other times I might stumble across it accidentally on the internet, radio, or TV. Regardless of where I found it, it now has my attention. Continue reading
