B Movie Review: Flash Gordon

flash

When I see the name Dino De Laurentiis attached to a movie, I immediately think of goofy science fiction and fantasy films. So obviously, when I saw it appear at the beginning of Flash Gordon I knew I was in for a special kind of treat. Despite its questionable “parentage”, Flash Gordon is definitely a must see film for any fan of B level science fiction films.

To begin, the audience finds itself introduced to our hero, Flash Gordon, quarterback for the New York Jets. Flash quickly finds himself, as well as travel agent Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov, hurtling into space in a craft of Zarkov’s design, in an attempt to save Earth from Ming the Merciless. Ming has decided to destroy Earth because Zarkov was smart enough to figure out Ming was behind a series of natural disasters. Flash and his companions eventually become prisoners of Ming and shortly thereafter Flash is executed. Or so it would appear. Flash is instead revived by Ming’s daughter and thus begins a series of events that will culminate in Flash leading an open revolt against Ming. Continue reading

Therefore I Geek Podcast Episode 59, Star Wars and Sundry

Walk Around in Circles is an appropriate track for this week’s episode, in which, Andrew and Dude discuss Star Wars.  With the new Rogue One trailer dropping last week and the blue ray of The Force Awakens available now, that’s the topic on everyone’s mind.  They also discuss the expanded universe and what is canon and what is no longer canon, trekking down a side path to discuss favorite expanded universe media and characters.  A brief foray into other cool movie topics, including Eddie the Eagle, and how the Coen brothers depict dopey Communism in Hail, Caesar.  After Star Wars has been thoroughly discussed, the pair venture into new movies, comics and role playing games that they are excited about.

Written by Ta-Nehisi Coates
Art by Brian Stelfreeze

I’m not usually one to give in to hype. In this case, there has been plenty of hype surrounding Ta-Nehisi Coates starting his comic writing career with Black Panther. I decided to pick up his first issue and see if there was any substance behind all the hype. Continue reading

Comic Diversity

To say I love comics is probably an understatement. It’s hard to believe I’ve only been reading them for the last nine years. Even in my short time as a comic fan, I’ve noticed that there has been a noticeable, and mostly positive change in the industry when it comes to the diversity of titles. To be clear, when I’m talking about diversity, I’m not talking about diversity among characters and those creating the comics (writers, artists, etc). While there has been some strides in that particular arena, there is certainly room for further improvement, and that’s a topic that deserves its own post. No, what I’m talking about is the fact that there are comics available to fit nearly any possible taste–nearly every genre is represented. We may not be in a comic book renaissance, but this is still a pretty awesome time to be a fan. Therefore, here are some of the best books I have found within various genres. Continue reading
