It is time once again for another Kickstarter Edition of Around the Web. This time we’ve got some interesting looking comic book projects worth checking out. The projects were chosen based on their art, the uniqueness of the story, the apparent production value, the available rewards and a general estimation of success. All of the projects had not yet been fully funded at the point they were chosen, but may have been in intervening time.
Goblins Graphic Novel #1 – This book looks like a lot of fun for all ages with a nice, clean art style. The book is made of several separate stories starring three goblins. The action is very slapstick based, similar to that of Looney Toons (and who doesn’t love that kind of humor).
Terra Kaiju – A short, landscape formatted book, Terra Kaiju’s appeal is in both the story and the art. The story follows a samurai who must sacrifice himself to awaken his village’s dormant god, so that it may fight another god, kaiju style. I found the use of color splatter in the art very intriguing.
The Ultimate 7 – Feels like a science fiction take on Seven Samurai. While their video isn’t overly impressive, the sample art work is pretty solid. This is also the third volume in a series and so more material is available to preview, should someone desire it.
Imposters – Of the books we’re highlighting today, this is by far the most unique concept. The idea is that every superhero in the world is the same person. The story is broken down into four parts, which are available separately as they are completed or as a whole, which is also a unique way of doing things.
The Somber Crown – A fantasy book that has a very Darwyn Cooke feel to the art, though it has its own, unique charms. The project is for a double size, single issue (40 pages) and is the continuation of a previous story line, which is available in one of the reward tiers.
Contributing to any or all of these projects would be a great investment and goes toward helping people get their start in a tough industry. While none of the projects will be shipping by Christmas, they’d still make great gifts if the recipient doesn’t mind waiting. And I’m sure there is no greater gift for those people behind the projects either.
